Our Walks:

Scheduled walks occur on the first Friday, second Wednesday and third weekend of each month. From January to June, our weekend walks take place on the third Saturday; from July to December, they are held on the third Sunday. All details are distributed via email and are available on the website.

Friday Walk

Friday Walks occur monthly on the first Friday, led by a designated person but typically not reccied. These walks are often linear. The route is about 8 miles, accessed by public transport, includes a pub lunch, and is walked at a brisk pace. We have completed the London LOOP, most of the Thames Path, the Lea Valley, some walks in Essex, the Capital Ring and the tributaries of the Thames, and parts the North Downs Way.

Wednesday - Slow Lane Walks

Slow Lane Walks take place on the second Wednesday of each month and are open to all members, with a maximum walking distance of 5 miles. These walks offer a shorter, slower-paced option for members who prefer reduced distances. A designated leader conducts a preliminary assessment to identify a suitable and interesting location, which participants will visit and explore. The group typically enjoys lunch at a café or pub before returning. When possible, public transport is used, with travel times generally restricted to no more than ninety minutes.

Weekend Walks

Weekend Walks take place monthly: Saturdays from January to June, Sundays from July to December, usually on the third weekend. We meet at a railway station or countryside car park near London around 9:30–10am, within 1–2 hours of central London. If rail travel is not possible, car sharing is encouraged. Walks are 8–10 miles with a pub lunch stop. Members volunteer to lead a walk and agree to carry out at least one recce to ensure the route and pub are suitable. These walks suit brisk walkers. The December Walk is held on the second Sunday, typically within Greater London.

Annual Birdsong Walk

This event takes place on a Thursday evening in late April or early May. A knowledgeable member will guide walkers through the Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park, identifying various bird species by their songs. The walk is followed with dinner at a local pub.

May Weekend

The third weekend in May is dedicated to a walking weekend away, typically requiring three to four hours of travel from London. In recent years, destinations have included Presteigne, Shaftesbury, Bridport, Hay on Wye, and Peasemarsh. Members stay in hotels or bed and breakfasts and take part in daily walks. Group walks are scheduled for Friday afternoon and Sunday morning, while Saturday offers several walking options to accommodate varying abilities. Members volunteer annually to organise the May Weekend, and efforts are made to alternate between inland and coastal locations.

Non-walking partners are welcome; nearby golf courses, stately homes, and gardens offer alternative activities. The annual dinner takes place on Saturday night.

You are welcome to join any walks and to bring friends. Please let the walk leader know if you plan to bring anyone. And remember that we hope that people who come on more than one or two walks will join the LWG.

Please note that you walk entirely at your own risk – the LWG does not have any insurance cover in case of accident or incident arising from any of our walks.

This is a private group, but we are always happy to see new members. For further information please speak to any member of the group who will be happy to introduce you to us or contact Frances, our membership secretary on membershipLWG@icloud.com
